Biarritz

Brittany ferries have overnight crossings to Santander or Bilbao from Portsmouth.  Both are approximately a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from Biarritz.

Other crossings inlcude:

Porstmouth to St-Malo (+7hr drive)

Portsmouth to Caen (+8hr drive),

Portsmouth or Poole to Cherbourg (+8hr drive)

Dover to Calais (+10hr drive)

Eurotunnel (+10hr drive)

If you're prepared for a 10 hour drive then the last two options are likely to be the most economical. If you have the time you can opt for an overnight stop.

Take an overnight train from St Pancras. This involves a change in Paris and picking up the late evening train from Paris Austerlitz (across town from Gare du Nord) arriving in Biarritz early morning.

The overnight sleeper trains have a choice of four and six berth cabins which can be great if travelling as a group. For the ultra oragnised there is also the opportunity to spend half a day in Paris. The evening train leaves around 10PM.

To travel during the day from St Pancras to Biarritz takes in the region of nine hours door to door.

Booking usually opens 92 days ahead. Eurostar usually opens 120 days ahead and at certain periods up to 180 days ahead.

Fares vary like air fares, so book as far ahead as you can.

On French overnight trains you can book sole or dual occupancy of a 4-berth couchette compartment, this facility is called Espace Privatif. To book this you need to use www.capitainetrain.com rather than loco2.com above.
